BMW 530i vs. 530d: An F10 Knives out Mystery

Most people still believe that gasoline gives you horsepower while diesel makes torque. One is an athlete and the other a workhorse. One is rev-happy, the other pushes you into your seat for brief stints. You pick whichever characteristic matters more to you and move on, right? Well, no.

I went down a rabbit hole recently, to find that it was BMW who truly turned this entire argument on its head when it unveiled the F10-generation 5 Series. I'm specifically talking about the pre-facelifted F10 in 530i and 530d form. That 530i was powered by a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter straight-six, producing 272 ps (268 hp) and 229 lb-ft (310 Nm) of torque. The original F10 530d came with a turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six, producing just 245 ps (242 hp).

So there you have it. Same displacement and cylinder count, same 530 badge, plus a substantial 26-horsepower advantage for the gasoline-powered sedan. Surely the latter is quicker? Nope.

Aided by an eight-speed automatic, the 268 hp 530i needed roughly 6.6 seconds to reach 62 mph (100 kph), whereas the 242 hp 530d did it in just 6.3 seconds. That's not all, though. BMW subsequently upgraded the pre-facelifted 530d, increasing power to 258 ps (254 hp), while torque climbed from an already substantial 398 lb-ft (540 Nm) to 413 lb-ft (560 Nm) - this resulted in a 0-62 sprint time of 6 seconds flat, with that same eight-speed auto.

In other words, with less horsepower, the 530d was over half a second quicker to 62 mph than the 530i. Who do you think won this battle, horsepower or torque?

Look, there's no mystery here from an engineering perspective, but the myth of the diesel is alive and well. Peak horsepower remains extremely important, but quoting those numbers alone tells you little about how quickly you can realistically accelerate. What matters is how much usable output the engine produces across its operating range, how the transmission multiplies it, and of course, how effectively the grunt reaches the tires.

That original 242 hp 530d F10 had 75% more torque than the equivalent 530i. And when you add the fuel economy factor, it's no wonder that Europe fell in love with diesels. But it's not just that. It's the fact that BMW made a straight-six turbodiesel that's genuinely better than its gasoline-powered counterpart. I know what you're thinking, I'm comparing a turbodiesel straight-six against a naturally-aspirated straight-six, so the joke is on me, right?

Wrong. I mean, feel free to dismiss the F10 on the grounds that the 530i of that generation wasn't turbocharged, but BMW rectified that discrepancy with the G30 generation. Sure, this time the 530i was at a disadvantage in terms of power, but only barely. We're talking 252 ps (248 hp) against the diesel's 265 ps (261 hp). Fans of gasoline would still be confident, despite the 13 hp difference (and especially over a longer distance).

BMW thinks it found a way around annoying assistance systems, but it's treading a very fine line

For years, regulators and carmakers have been rushing so-called active safety functions to the market, with the hope that they would improve traffic safety. You know, things like automatic emergency braking systems, lane departure warning, and such. However, instead of proving helpful, most of these systems are a nuisance, and hence the first thing drivers deactivate before starting a drive.

Well, for those who hated such systems, there is now hope, thanks to BMW's latest driver assistance systems, which debuted on the iX3. Unlike other carmakers, BMW appears to have listened to drivers' grievances and designed the Neue Klasse active safety systems so that they don't end up deactivated from the get-go.

There are several new safety assist features, starting with the Exit Warning, which prevents dooring accidents by delaying the door opening if a vehicle is approaching from behind. The car uses radar sensors to monitor the area around the parked vehicle. If a risk of a collision is detected, the electronic door lock delays the opening of the door until the danger has passed. To be fair, this is something that Tesla pioneered, with a similar system launched in 2024.

Besides that, BMW iX3's safety assist package includes several evasive steering functions, depending on the situation. In addition to braking, the system can automatically steer around an obstacle, including vehicles and pedestrians coming from the side. In every case, the system keeps the vehicle within its lane if there's sufficient space to maneuver.

However, the most interesting and the one I am most excited about is the new cooperative Lane Keeping Assistant. BMW calls its ADAS package "Symbiotic Drive" because it was designed to work with the driver instead of against them. The carmaker promises that the system "understands" the driver's intentions through steering input and line of sight, so that assistance systems intervene only when necessary to prevent an imminent collision risk or the vehicle leaving the road.

The Lane Keeping Assist system, for instance, only provides warnings or steering interventions when the vehicle detects an unintended lane departure or an imminent collision. However, if the maneuver is initiated by the driver, such as when avoiding a pothole, the system does not normally intervene.

To determine if the driver initiated the maneuver, the car takes into account details such as turn signals, active steering input, or if the driver is performing a shoulder check. This is what makes BMW Symbiotic Drive different from other driver assistance systems, and this is also what can turn it into a liability. It's something that Tesla has been fighting with for years, without being able to find the right balance.

Mark my words: Hyundai will soon become a major threat for Volkswagen and Toyota (globally)

Currently, Toyota Motor Company ranks undefeated at the top of the automotive world with more than 10 million sales in 2025 on a global level, followed by Volkswagen AG with slightly less than 9 million. The Hyundai Motor Group comes firmly in third place with around 7.65 million units delivered last year, according to GodEson Tools.

Toyota grew by six percent in 2025, Volkswagen faltered by around 2.3%, and the South Koreans (Hyundai, Kia, Genesis) soared by 2.5%. The main trends clearly show that Chinese brands are on the rise, especially BYD (fourth) and Geely (just outside the top 10), but they have a long way to go before posing a threat at the top despite their EV innovations and aggressive expansion.

BYD sold around 4.6 million vehicles – all new energy vehicles (NEVs) globally in 2025, overtaking Tesla as the main electric vehicle manufacturer and soaring above General Motors, which struggled with a small decline but held its fifth position. It’s pretty clear that some legacy automakers are struggling, like VW, General Motors, Honda, or Nissan – as they face declining EV sales.

Meanwhile, Toyota continues to thrive with hybrids after it has defended the technology for years, while EVs are now mainstream with around 30% of global sales, though not necessarily in places like the United States. What does it mean for 2026 and beyond?

Well, if you ask us, the rankings show a crossroads this year: Chinese makers continue to surge internationally, even as they stall at home in China. Toyota will continue to dominate for the foreseeable future because of its hybrid strategy (pun intended), but if BYD continues to grow at this rate of almost 20%, it might challenge the top spot within a decade.

Or not – because the competition isn’t sitting idle and we can see that some automakers have adapted to the trends quite fast. Even Toyota has quietly started increasing the pace of EV launches while automakers like Hyundai x Kia x Genesis have a sprawling EV lineup, a good mix of hybrids, PHEVs, and ICE, plus compelling new models and numerous refreshes.

What does it mean for consumers? They will have more choices, additional options at both ends of the market (cheap and ultra-luxury), better and cheaper EV technology, and competitive pricing among ICE and hybrids, for sure. Brands must adapt or risk falling behind – but now that’s valid for everyone, including the Chinese, which don’t have the luxury of high sales at home anymore.

However, this time around, let’s take a minute to consider one of the brands I consider a favorite among the top ten automakers – not only because of its good strategy but also due to its audacity to go against the current when everyone tries to swim to safety. I’m talking about Hyundai, the brand – not the group.

Tesla FSD V14 Lite driving over a log shows how dangerous new features can be on decrepit hardware

In a video that became viral over the weekend, a HW3 Tesla running FSD V14 Lite fails to recognize a huge log blocking the road and drives over it without slowing down. The car is probably totaled, but the bigger take is that this accident shows the perils of trying to keep alive old hardware with new features.

For years, Elon Musk and Tesla have been promising that every Tesla would become autonomous and earn money for their owners with just a software update. And yet, it's not just software that's keeping Tesla EVs from fulfilling this prophecy. Over the past year, it has become increasingly obvious that Tesla hardware is just as incapable of supporting full, unsupervised autonomy.

No matter how much Tesla Full Self-Driving progresses, there was always something that kept it from driving autonomously without human supervision. As the carmaker refined its end-to-end autonomous driving software, it ran into hardware limitations that prompted it to replace the computer chips and sensors with better and more powerful parts.

In 2023, Tesla started installing the Hardware 4 Autopilot computer and improved cameras into its vehicles. It didn't take long before FSD software ate all the headroom afforded by these upgrades. This left owners of older vehicles feeling abandoned, as the FSD development was almost exclusively done on HW4 chips. At the time, Elon Musk promised to replace the obsolete computers if they proved incapable of autonomous driving. Free of charge for those who bought FSD in full, said Musk.

However, a miracle happened this summer, with FSD V14 Lite released specifically for the obsolete HW3 vehicles. Tesla distilled the main FSD V14 models to make them run on the less capable hardware in older vehicles. As the new build started rolling out to more vehicles, owners were happy to see significant improvements in smoothness. They even thought the wizardry that Tesla performed would allow their cars to run even more advanced FSD versions in the future.

And that's the problem: the less capable hardware exposed FSD V14 Lite users to increased danger, as the older computers cannot function the way Tesla designed them to all the time. In some cases, the more demanding software fried the HW3 computers due to overheating. In others, perfectly avoidable situations led to crashes that could've ended in tragedy.

Spy shots and renderings of the week

When BYD set out to build a hi-po shooting brake under the Denza brand, few anticipated a track weapon designed to make established full-electric thrillers look timid. Caught testing completely uncloaked at the Nordschleife, the Z9 GT Xtreme has laid bare its motorsport-derived aerodynamic package, starting with the deeply sculpted front bumper with enlarged air intakes and a prominent splitter.

Deeply contoured skirts direct airflow along the flank, where you will also find lightweight alloys that frame high-performance brakes. The rear end, however, commands greater attention due to a swan neck-type wing that impresses with its width and the generously sized endplates. Lower down, a serious-looking diffuser and specialized air ducting in the rear wheel arches are featured, striking a balance between downforce and efficiency.

For the Xtreme, whispers indicate an eye-watering maximum output figure of 1,973 mechanical horsepower from three electric drive units. Should this figure hold, BYD's performance shooting brake will serve as the shooting brake to beat around the world's most challenging circuit. Denza has the 6:55 lap time of the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT Manthey Kit in its crosshairs, and from the looks of it, Denza will easily drop a faster lap in due time.

While it's rare for a prototype to be parked unattended in an open courtyard with little in the way of camouflage to its name, Lexus did exactly that at the Nurburgring. To be unleashed for the 2028 model year, the RX Morizo RR builds on Lexus' bestseller with aggressive styling and high-output shenanigans from a next-generation turbo gasser with hybrid assistance.

Closer inspection reveals dramatic stylistic and functional revisions, including the substantially larger intakes up front, satisfying the increased cooling requirements of the G20E inline-four turbo and front braking assembly. To accommodate its 265- and 295-section Michelin tires, Lexus and Toyota's Gazoo Racing division went for widened flares that impart a hunkered-down stance. Pretty large Brembo brakes are present as well.

An unfinished bumper dominates the rear end, showing hand-cut notches created specifically to fit dual exhaust outlets instead of a quad-pipe arrangement. Transplanting the Morizo name to the mid-sized RX demonstrates the resolve to challenge midsizers from Audi Sport, BMW M, and Mercedes-AMG. At this moment, hearsay suggests 600-something horsepower from the 2.0-liter turbo I4 engine and two electric motors.

Arguably the most interesting prototype our carparazzi spotted this week, the autonomous Mercedes-AMG GT 63 Coupe has been lapping the Green Hell mostly on its own, swapping human lap-time chasing for clever algorithms. Draped in matte copper paint, the development vehicle first mapped the circuit in full, hugging the right and left edges of the 'Ring.

Both passes were particularly slow. Once positional mapping concluded, engineers dispatched the rear-biased coupe back onto the circuit for autonomous lapping. Telephoto imagery reveals a helmeted test driver with their hands deliberately hovering inches away from the steering wheel instead of gripping it. An interior monitoring camera positioned just behind the steering wheel confirms the role of the gentleman in the driver's seat.

This project builds upon Mercedes-AMG's prior autonomous research programs. Four years ago, for example, a GT 63 S 4-Door Coupe capable of accelerating, braking, and steering along a predefined racing line without human intervention was unveiled by the German automaker. Elevating this technology to the Nurburgring is another way of saying that both Affalterbach and Stuttgart will establish a new benchmark for autonomous lap times, besting the 10:29 lap of the Xiaomi YU7 GT in the process.

Jaguar has been on a tear lately, and not in a good way if you ask brand purists. The British marque has become a pale shadow of its former self, and Coventry has also managed to piss everyone off by moving into a full-electric direction with the weird-looking Type 01 grand tourer. While some digital creators tried to morph the newcomer into something palatable, others decided that Jaguar should have continued along its traditional path. 

Jaxuar XJ 0 (Rendering: mike.g.concepts)

Enter the XJ 0 by Mike G. The Austria-based pixel artist envisioned a luxury flagship sedan capable of honoring Sir William Lyons while stepping boldly into the zero-emission age. Taking direct inspiration from older XJ generations and the hideously underrated XJS coupe, his concept reinterprets the quad circular headlight setup we all know and love.

The rendering further includes a retro-tastic faux grille that is gently illuminated, paying homage to classic British luxury without requiring. JLR effectively canned the next-gen XJ before the current Jaguar reboot even began. On multiple occasions, the company explained that its repositioning as an electric ultra-luxury brand stopped it from moving forward with the XJ project. Alas, the XJ 0 isn't going to change JLR's mind anytime soon.

GTA 6 fully revealed, finally, for real, no joke, no leak

The closer we get to the official GTA 6 release date, the more press time the biggest game launch ever receives. This time, it’s for a good reason, as Rockstar finally took the wraps off the extended look on Netflix and YouTube.

This movie-like trailer provided us with a closer look at everything, revealing that it’ll be harder to steal cars. A criminal profile will be created for each character, and escaping the police won’t erase it.

Rockstar’s trailer generated so much excitement that people forgot about all the leaks happening in the last couple of weeks. A new one was published just before the extended look went live, starring Jason and Lucia.

Otherwise, Apple just made Apple Maps much worse by integrating ads. We’ve known this would eventually happen, but Apple has now released the official tools for businesses to start integrating ads in Apple Maps.

In the Android Auto space, Google Pixel 11 buyers are battling an unusual bug where the new-generation Google Maps experience goes missing after the phone upgrade. Not even Google seems to know what’s happening, so a fix is not yet available.
